A BIG second half paved the way for Port Macquarie to return to the winners list on Saturday in the Upper Mid North Coast Rugby competition.
The Pirates led Southern Cross University 14-12 at half-time before powering away to win 40-17.
One of the big positives for Port Macquarie was the performance of Rhys Martin.
The teenager has played reserve grade for the Pirates and is a dominant figure in the under-18s, but grabbed his chance to play a full first grade match.
Martin scored two tries, one through a 90-metre run after an interception.
Others to play well for Port Macquarie were Chris Turnham and Korie Paio.
Meanwhile, Hastings Valley Vikings maintained its lead on the ladder with a 19-0 win against Coffs Harbour.
In a battle for top spot, the Vikings were pleased to keep the Snappers scoreless in the penultimate round before finals.
Meanwhile, 15 Port Macquarie children will make history this Sunday when they run on to Oxley Oval as the first junior Vikings side since the club was formed.
The junior team will compete in a gala day that will include sides from Taree, Port Macquarie, Kempsey, Nambucca Heads and Coffs Harbour.
The gala days are the build up to a Mid North Coast Saturday morning competition for 2014 that will be available for junior children who want to play rugby union.
