Cyclists on board

AN OUTDOOR advertising campaign urging cyclists and motorists to share the road safely has been erected in Port Macquarie.
Transport for NSW and the Amy Gillett Foundation joined forces for the campaign, following a tragic spike in cyclist deaths on the state’s roads.
Member for Port Macquarie Leslie Williams said 10 cyclists had died on NSW roads this year – triple the number of the same time last year and three more than in the whole of 2012.
“Cyclists are extremely vulnerable on the roads and it’s tragic that there has been so many cyclist lives lost in less than six months,” Mrs Williams said.
“This campaign reminds cyclists and motorists to be aware of each other and that bicycle rider safety is a two-way street.
“The ‘a metre matters’ and ‘stop on red’ campaigns promote cyclist safety among those on their bikes and the motorists they interact with.”
Mrs Williams said the billboard locations were strategically chosen.
“Most of the locations of the billboards have been selected based on crash data on cyclist injury and fatalities,” she said.
The Port Macquarie billboard – one of 13 across the state – was last week erected on Hastings River Drive, near Fernbank Creek.
