The Port Macquarie High School table tennis team consisting of Jack Budgen, Nathan Robinson, Tyler Layton and Aston Howard-Chen, made it to the State Finals of the competition on June 25 at Homebush Olympic Stadium.
They achieved this by beating Camden Haven High 5 games to 2, followed by a win over Coffs Harbour Senior College by the same margin. This put them into the Regional Final against a strong Kingscliff High team who they played in Grafton. They all performed exceptionally against this formidable opponent who finished second in the state last year and ended up prevailing over them 5 games to 2.
At the State Finals they played against Cecil Hills, Keira, Kelso and Tamworth High Schools.
They all played extremely well against the best in the state and after the initial rounds came up against Epping Boys for the play off for 5th and 6th.
They had some very close matches against Epping Boys who eventually won 4 games to 2. This put them into a play off with Kelso High from Bathurst for 7th and 8th. In this match after the singles it was tied up at 2 games each.
In the doubles the first 2 games were split again at one apiece so it was left to the last doubles match to decide the match.
In a seesawing game it came down to the final game and they were narrowly beaten to end up 8th in the state out of over 100 teams.
They were all excellent representatives of Port High and can be very proud of their efforts. They played their matches with a sense of good play and fairness and in the right spirit.
