Runners storm Port

THE big wet in NSW has been a boon for the Port Macquarie Race Club, with an extra race added to tomorrow’s program.
Races have been washed out at Randwick, Warick Farm and Hawkesbury this week and, as a result, nominations soared for Port Macquarie.
The track was rated dead 5 yesterday morning, but race club chief executive Michael Bowman was wary of forecast rain for the nine-race card.
“If the rain comes as forecast they’ll be a downgrade,” he said.
“It’s in reasonable condition at the moment, though.”
Horses competed on a rain-affected track at Port Macquarie almost two weeks ago on Wauchope Cup day and most runners went straight to the outside rail.
“I think it was more a case of monkey-see, monkey-do,” Bowman said.
“There wasn’t much difference between the inside rail and outside of the track. I think the jockeys got it into their heads that they needed to be on the outside.”
The first race jumps at 11.33am and the last is at 4.20pm.
