WAUCHOPE’S stronghold on the Group 3 rugby league competition continued on Sunday as the Blues downed Port Macquarie at Regional Stadium.
Robert Trembath scored two tries in the 32-22 victory, which helped the visitors maintain its two-point advantage at the top of the table.
Others to cross the line for Wauchope were Sam Watts, Beau White, Aaron Ison and Anthony Coombes.
Watts made four conversions and that proved to be a key factor in the Blues’ win.
Port Macquarie scored one less try than Wauchope, but the Sharks were unable to finish off from the kicking tee.
Tyrone Nelson, Samugla Wara, Rehannan French, Scott Grant and Joel Asher were the scorers for the home side, while Ethan McKenna kicked the only goal.
Hot on the heels of Wauchope in second spot is Old Bar Beach, after the Pirates thumped Wingham Tigers 40-10 on Sunday.
Forster Tuncurry is also on track for a finals berth after the third-placed Hawks blitzed Taree City 46-24.
The Port City Breakers, holding on to fourth spot, had a bye.
Star Breakers forward Mitchell Fowler represented Group 3 in Tuncurry on Saturday and was selected in the Country team, despite playing in a 36-14 loss to Group 7.
Meanwhile, the Beach triumphed against the Bush in the Hastings District Rugby League competition’s annual intra-representative match on Saturday. The sides are made up of the four sides closest to the beach and the four closest to the bush.
The Beach led 24-0, but the Bush fought back to level scores at 34 apiece after 80 minutes.
Extra time comprising five minutes each-way was played and the Beach regathered to win 42-34.
