FITNESS fans will have the opportunity to put Port Macquarie’s new outdoor gym to the test over the next few weeks.
Port Macquarie-Hastings Council recently installed the outdoor gym at Town Beach Reserve through the Move Eat Live Well Program and will be hosting a series of come and try sessions to show people how to use the equipment safely.
There will be 22 one-hour sessions, starting this week and continuing through until September 20.
All sessions will be conducted by a qualified and experienced trainer and will be suitable for people of all ages and all levels of ability.
Mayor Peter Besseling said $45,000 in funding provided through the Federal Government’s healthy communities initiative helped deliver the first outdoor exercise equipment for Port Macquarie.
“Outdoor gyms have been well received in other regional towns across Australia and the new Town Beach equipment is expected to encourage increased use of what is already popular community space,” Cr Besseling said.
“Visitors and residents who have tried it out this week have been thrilled, with many saying they will use it on a daily basis.”
Installation of the gym formed part of council’s Town Beach Masterplan, with residents asked to comment on the equipment they would like to see installed.
Council has also committed another $15,000 for the installation of an outdoor gym at Jack Dwyer Reserve in Wauchope.
For those people wanting to take part in one of the free come and try sessions, a full schedule of classes and the registration form is available online at www.pmhc.nsw.gov.au/livewell or by calling council on 65818 111.
