DANCERS of all ages will strut their stuff at the annual Bay View Rock ‘n’ Roll Championships in Hoppers Crossing on Saturday.
Among the competitors will be grade four pupils Mackenzie and Cooper from St Andrew’s Primary School in Werribee.
The pair, aged eight and nine, have been taking classes at Anna’s Rock & Roll Rebels for 18 months.
“I started because I always wanted to learn old dancing. I like old movies and old dancing and I wanted to learn some steps,” Mackenzie said.
“It’s very energetic and you can have lots of fun. I want to be a dancer when I grow up.”
With her partner Cooper, the young dancer has won several first, second and third prizes in dance competitions.
“I’m pretty good at it. I’m getting better,” Cooper said.
“Mackenzie is a good partner because she does a lot with me.”
Another pair of dancers from Anna’s Rock ‘n’ Roll Rebels, George Bogdan from Altona and Wyndham Vale resident Rita Agius, began lessons six years ago.
Mr Bogdan said he took up rock ‘n’ roll for his health and socialising, but he has also found a dance romance.
He has been dating his dance teacher Anna Pittella for five years. Ms Pittella organises the Bay View Rock ‘n’ Roll Championships and takes classes every week in Altona and Wyndham Vale.
“You get adrenaline running through your veins, it’s a magical feeling especially when you’re competing and know when people are watching they are clapping you, it’s a top feeling,” Mr Bogdan said.
The Bay View Rock ‘n’ Roll Championships will be on Saturday from 6pm at the Wyndham Leisure and Events Centre. Tickets: adult $17, under 16 $6.
