NEWPORT is yet to get on the board in Victorian Baseball Association’s Division One competition after a second-round loss to Melbourne on Sunday.
The Rams lost 2-1 in a low-scoring affair on their home diamond a week after falling to an 11th-inning run from Waverley in the season opener.
Newport is one of four teams in the 10-team competition without a win in the first two rounds.
The result in the firsts ended a dreary day for the Rams, with the seconds, thirds and fourths also recording losses.
Newport plays Geelong – another team yet to win so far – in a midweek game at Altona on Thursday night.
In Division Three, Werribee thrashed St Kilda 12-1 to continue its perfect start under new coach Phil Balzer.
The Giants also enjoyed a 12-7 loss in the seconds, while the fourths were pipped by a run.
The firsts joined Williamstown at the top of the ladder after it crushed Berwick 8-0, following its 40-3 thumping of Footscray in round one.
Footscray shares bottom spot with Berwick and St Kilda after two rounds.
In round three this Sunday Williamstown plays Springvale, Werribee travels to Ormond/Glenhuntly and Footscray takes on Berwick.
