Bowling brilliance saves the day

By Adrian Ceddia
FOR the second successive round, a slice of brilliance from an Altona bowler turned a potential loss into a memorable victory in the Victorian Sub District Cricket Association.
Last round it was first-gamer Gary Hancock who captured five scalps on the second day to hand the A’s a precious win over Williamstown by 50 runs.
And on Saturday, with Altona seemingly on track for a loss against Yarraville, leg spinner Matthew Boglis stepped up with an amazing six-wicket haul to help his side to a 28-run win.
Boglis struck in two devastating bursts, first snaring three wickets in 10 balls and later knocking over another three within seven deliveries to finish with 6/41 from 12 overs.
Yarraville went from 4/76 to be all out for 154, after David Wolfe (68) and Ben Collins (49) combined to lift Altona to 182 on the first day.
In other games, Werribee came close to toppling the undefeated Melton at home, but was eclipsed by two wickets.
A total of 90 runs to Patrick Eckel on day one lifted Werribee to an impressive total of 284, but Melton’s Heath Pritchard (110) and Anthony Gale (96 not out) combined to foil the underdog’s plans.
Williamstown was also on the end of a loss, its third of the season, to Brighton on the first innings.
