Clean, green toilets set to raise the tone

NEW self-cleaning, energy efficient toilets in the Yarraville Gardens will address public concerns over the previous toilets.
The $200,000 facelift is part of Maribyrnong City Council’s ongoing goal to improve toilets throughout the municipality.
Saltwater Ward Councillor Janet Rice said the new toilets were brighter, cleaner and more pleasant to use.
“The safety and cleanliness of our public facilities is a major issue for our residents, as is their accessibility.
“This is a fantastic upgrade to the park and one I am sure the many families that use the park will appreciate,” she said.
Toilets across the municipality are being upgraded after the annual Community Satisfaction Survey found community concern about the condition and cleanliness of public toilet.
As part of the project to upgrade the park’s facilities, the original toilet block has been demolished, the existing sewer upgraded, the electricity supply has been renewed, and landscaping works have been undertaken to refurbish the site.
The new facilities in the Yarraville Gardens are fully disability compliant, auto-timed, and have an environmentally friendly water tap and auto hand dryer.
“We’ve also built a new bluestone-lined path to the toilets which improves accessibility and matches the look and feel of the heritage gardens,” Cr Rice said.
She said the toilets also included technology to prevent damage through vandalism and have a design that discourages loitering. Energy efficient external lights have also been installed to improve safety for users.
The new facilities include a rain water tank and pump which will supply all the water necessary for running the toilet.
The toilets are open between 7am and 7pm with extended hours during the summer months.
