Council says arson won’t stop skate park

A SKATE and BMX facility will be built in Presidents Park despite two arson attacks in less than a month at the adjacent adventure playground.
Wyndham City Council is expected to beef up security, including adding extra lights and patrols to the McGraths Rd park to prevent further vandalism.
Mayor Shane Bourke said arsonists would never defeat the community.
“We are now more determined than ever to make this a great asset,” he said.
Councillors said the skate park would be a positive addition to Presidents Park, which also contains baseball, hockey and softball facilities.
“Perhaps this will give a sense of ownership to kids to police themselves,” said Cr Mark Rose.
The skate park is expected to be completed by March next year.
Seven neighbours complained about the skate park being built, or to its proposed location.
They fear more hoons will be attracted to the park and they already have trouble sleeping, especially in summer.
Wyndham has skate facilities at Mossfiel Reserve in Hoppers Crossing and the Boardwalk in Point Cook.
