Council seeks announcement on station funding

MARIBYRNONG City Council resolved at last Tuesday’s council meeting to write to Premier Steve Bracks congratulating the government on the progress achieved by the Footscray Station Working Group.
The council will also request the government make an announcement regarding funding for the station before November’s election.
The issue was raised during discussions about the Footscray Transit City project, a project that envisions a revamped Footscray by 2030.
Mayor Janet Rice said upgrading Footscray Station was one of the council’s most challenging issues, a separate issue being the impact of the Port of Melbourne expansion and related freight activity.
“The development of Footscray Station is not in conflict with and doesn’t compromise any freight movement proposals including adding extra freight lines through Footscray Station,” she said.
Agencies involved in the upgrade include the council, VicUrban, the Department of Infrastructure, VicTrack and the Department of Sustainability and Environment.
