BRAYBROOK and Tottenham residents and property owners have until this Friday to confirm their details for the upcoming Stony Creek Ward by-election.
While it is expected the by-election will be held in November, residents and property owners must ensure their address details are correct on the electoral roll before 4pm this Friday 14 September.
Victorian Electoral Commissioner Steve Tully said it was a common misconception that only property owners were eligible to vote in council elections.
“It is compulsory for all Australian citizens aged 18 to 70 who live in the ward to vote — property owners and tenants alike,” he said.
Individuals and the directors or secretaries of companies that pay rates in the ward but are not residents are also entitled to vote, but must apply to Maribyrnong City Council to be included on the roll.
The by-election is the result of last month’s resignation of Stony Creek Ward councillor Joseph Cutri.
Electors can check their enrolment details by viewing the roll during business hours at the Maribyrnong City Council offices in Footscray or at the Braybrook Community Centre in Braybrook.
Enrolment forms can be downloaded from www.vec.vic.gov.au or collected from any post office.
