AN advisory committee that helps to ensure residents with disabilities have access to important community resources needs new members to continue its good work.
The Disability Advisory Committee (DAC) is calling for expressions of interest from new members working in disability services wanting to shape the future of the City of Maribyrnong in an accessible way.
Since the committee’s creation in 2002, it has contributed to tailoring a range of facilities, infrastructure and projects, including the Maribyrnong Aquatic Centre, to suit the needs of residents with disabilities.
During the past three-year term, four people with various disabilities, two disabilities carers and two people from disability agencies have made up the important mix of residents on the committee, but now it is time for a change.
The DAC chair, councillor Janet Rice, said she hoped community members would express interest in the two vacant positions.
“I encourage anyone in Maribyrnong who works at a community organisation servicing people with a disability to put your hand up and take on the challenge,” she said.
The council established DAC to aid consultation with people with disabilities and enable community input on disability-related issues.
Cr Rice said committee members would be given the opportunity to meet new people, advocate for the rights of members of the community and watch ideas take shape and flourish.
