A COUNSELLOR says the added stress of Christmas can turn regular gamblers into problem gamblers.
“The increased pressures which families can experience at this time of the year can leave some people at greater risk with their gambling,” said Amanda Jones, co-ordinator for Gamblers’ Help Western, the government-funded counselling service for Melbourne’s West.
“They may find they are turning to gambling more often or for longer periods, to escape difficult emotions, or spending more money gambling than they intended to quickly solve their cash flow problem.”
Ms Jones said people need to be aware that gambling is not a quick or easy way to get cash at Christmas or to pay off New Year’s debt.
“Many people believe that gambling provides short-term financial relief but, in reality, the odds are always against you,” she said.
Gamblers’ Help offers free and confidential information and counselling to anyone affected by problem gambling.
