TWO schools in the Brimbank/Melton area have received awards in literacy and numeracy.
Kings Park Primary School and Caroline Springs College have received highly commended awards, along with $5000, from the Federal Government as part of the National Literacy and Numeracy Week (NLNW).
Education, Science and Training Minister Julie Bishop announced the winners last month.
During a presentation at Caroline Springs College last Monday, a graph showed more than 60 per cent of the Prep students were achieving 90 per cent accuracy in literacy a few years ago.
The graph showed more than 90 per cent of Grade Two students were achieving 90 per cent accuracy.
Kings Park Primary School won the award mainly for its highly focused numeracy teaching and learning program.
“The theme for NLNW this year is ‘making a difference’.
“I commend all these schools (46 in total) for making a major contribution to Australian education,” Ms Bishop said.
“They are highlighting the benefits that come from meeting the literacy and numeracy needs of their students, and achieving significantly improved outcomes.
“Literacy and numeracy are foundation skills for successful education and productive life.
“Improved literacy and numeracy outcomes encourage higher school retention rates, lead to improved employment opportunities, enhance engagement in society and support future economic prosperity,”
The Federal Government provided $355,000 for the awards.
