Police reveal camera sites

Police hope list will slow motorists, Michael Sinclair reports

A COMPLETE list of mobile speed camera locations in Brimbank has been released, in what police say is an attempt to get motorists to slow down.
Police yesterday posted the possible locations of more than 2000 mobile camera sites to a government website for public access.
“On the one hand this is about ensuring Victoria Police is open and transparent with the Victorian community.
“On the other, we are prepared to do whatever it takes to stop people killing themselves and others on the roads,” Assistant Commissioner Noel Ashby said yesterday.
“If just one motorist logs on to the internet, takes a mental note of a speed camera location and makes the choice to slow down, that’s potentially one life saved.”
The sites have been determined by police after consultation with the Local Community Road Safety Council and other groups.
“All research points to a distinct relationship between speeding and accidents on the road. Ultimately speeding increases your chances of causing serious injury and in some cases death to yourself or others,” Asst Comm Ashby said.
Asst Comm Ashby said that while the street locations of cameras had been published, cameras could be set up anywhere within the guidelines so it was not always possible for people to know exactly where they are.
“There is in no excuse for speeding. While Victoria Police is committed to reducing the road toll and enforcing the law, some motorists simply have to change their driving habits. We’re prepared to do what it takes get people thinking more seriously about their lives,” he said.
