MELTON Shire Council has warned residents not to handle or provoke snakes after a recent increase in the number of snake sightings.
The combination of warm days and cold nights has seen some snakes seeking warmth on footpaths, driveways and other concrete areas, particularly around creeks.
Mayor Bruce Rowan said keeping a trim lawn and cleaning up piles of rubbish would reduce the risk of snakes around residential properties.
“If the snake is a potential threat to people or animals, leave it alone and immediately contact council for details of a registered snake handler in the area,” he said.
