THE work that went into designing and building one of Wyndham’s newest landmarks has been recognised at a Victorian awards ceremony.
Wyndham Council and BMD Constructions were highly commended at the 2013 Victorian Civil Contractors Earth Awards for creating the Wedge Street Pedestrian Bridge.
Wyndham Mayor Heather Marcus said the commendation recognised the difficult nature of the project, which required 300 tonnes of steel to be precariously manoeuvred through the trees in the area without damaging them.
“This was a particularly complex project, as the 140 metre long footbridge now spans the Werribee River and has been carefully placed between the River Red Gums along the river banks and in Wyndham Park,” Cr Marcus said.
“There are 148 types of plants and 50 types of animals in the area, including a platypus population in the river, so construction had to carefully move the bridge sections into place without damaging the trees or disturbing the wildlife.
Cr Marcus also recognised the hard work of BMD Constructions in helping the bridge become a reality.
“BDM Constructions also had to carefully create spaces for the bridge supports along the river and in the park with minimal environmental impact,” she said.
“We are very proud of this award and congratulate BMD Constructions on a great job on our iconic Wedge Street Bridge, built to connect the vibrant Werribee CBD with Wyndham.”
The Wedge Street Pedestrian Bridge was completed after the Wedge St Piazza and was one of the first major projects that will make up part of the Werribee CBD’s redevelopment.
