AUSTRALIAN swimming fans might soon have to get used to hearing the name ‘Vasta’.
Hoppers Crossing residents Paris, 14, and Cartier Vasta, 11, have recently been busy making serious inroads with their swimming exploits and both have big plans for the future.
At last month’s short-course championships held at Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre, the Vasta sisters walked away with 13 medals in what proved to be a stunning meet for the talented pair.
Paris scored two silvers and three bronze medals in her events while Cartier was simply outstanding, swimming a number of personal best times on her way to a whopping seven gold medals to go with one silver.
As a result Paris ended up qualifying for the state team, which on her ever-increasing resume will read nicely alongside her selection for the Australian Youth Squad.
The pair’s recent success also proved to be a good result for the Laverton Swimming Club, which is now ranked the 12th-best club in the state.
Both girls are trained by their father Alex out of the Victoria University pool in Footscray, and provided they continue to thrive off the back of their several weekly training sessions, there’s every chance they’ll soon be reaching for the stars.
“It’s pretty serious for me,” Paris said.
“I want to take it to world championships and the Olympics, and hopefully I can go to the Commonwealth Games trials next year.”
Younger sister Cartier has set herself even loftier goals.
“I’m looking to take it all the way to the Olympics and the world championships and I really want to try and make the Olympics when I’m 14,” Cartier declared.
Should they continue produce such impressive times, you can rest assured we haven’t heard the last of the Vasta sisters.
