DESPITE being one of the youngest clubs in the Williamstown District Cricket Association, Tarneit has big plans for the future.
The club was founded for the 2011/12 season and has gone from strength to strength in its short history.
After finishing on top of the C Composite Grade ladder last season, recently appointed president Vinny Sharma announced a new junior program would run at the club this year.
“We are initially looking at an under-11s competition,” he said.
“We are also getting a lot of interest from kids who are a bit older than that so we are looking at under-13s or under-15s as well. That is still up for discussion. We are planning to hold a registration day and after that we will be able to know for sure.”
Outgoing president Sam Singh said it was an exciting time for the club.
“We had a very successful first two years and we have developed a successful program,” Singh said.
“The first year we had two teams and the second year we had three teams. This year we are trying to build on that success.
“We are putting a lot of focus on juniors. We will have one or two junior competition teams going in this year and we will run a longer Milo season which will be great.”
Anyone interested in joining the Tarneit Cricket Club for the 2013/14 season or who would like to find out more about the club’s junior program is encouraged to log onto Tarneit’s official website, http://tarneitcricketclub.com.au/.
With its base in one of Victoria’s biggest growth corridors, Singh said it was great to see more junior sport becoming available.
“We started this club with a lot of community focus and cricket focus,” he said.
“We realise now working with a lot of groups, there are very few sports groups or clubs for kids. In the last two years we have learnt what is required and hopefully this year we can implement a program which can really add value to juniors not only at the Milo level but also at the competition level.
“The only way you can be there for a long time, is if you have junior players fitting into seniors.”
