A CENTURY of community worship will be commemorated this weekend in Sunshine.
More than 200 people from around the world are expected to attend a service and lunch for the Sunshine Uniting Church’s centenary.
Reverend Graham Morris said the congregation survived back in the ’70s because neighbouring churches “recognised they had to come together to pool their resources”.
He said the mission continued to help the neighbourhood with welfare distribution, food parcels, a men’s shed program, a Sudanese mothers’ group, and a pre-release prison program.
A Samoan group also worships once a month with the congregation.
Church pianist Thelma Baker, one of the longest-attending patrons, said the original building was a Methodist church that served more than 1000 men employed in Sunshine.
A new brick church was built in 1959.
The church will be open on Saturday from 1pm to display memorabilia, and Mrs Baker will also be there to talk about the church’s history.
For more information or to book for the lunch call Mrs Baker on 9311 7361.
