THE Wyndhamvale Football Club is putting the word out for more players ahead of the 2013 season.
But on this occasion the men are asked to take a step back while the women prepare to take centre stage.
The club is launching a senior women’s football side to compete in the Victorian Women’s Football League.
Wyndhamvale has had a successful youth girls’ team for quite some time and after losing some of its players to other clubs for senior competition, is now hoping the new side will allow all girls to continue playing.
“That’s the plan,” Wyndhamvale’s Kerry Saunders said. “Rather than have them not play anything or disappear and play for someone else, it would be great to keep the girls together and see the club grow from there.
“Hopefully we can get some of the older players who have played in the last few years to come back again.”
At this stage the club has around 15 players who are signed up and committed to the team for next season.
With the popularity of women’s football continuing to increase each season, Saunders said it would be great to be a part of the growth area in the game.
“We are more than happy to have more players, supporters and all the support staff that go with a football team as well,” she said.
“With the finals coming up and the better weather coming along, it’s almost like the football season runs for an extra month with all the excitement. Hopefully we can build on that.
“There are more and more youth teams starting to run around at the local level and the AFL has got the girls starting Auskick and everything like that. If we can contribute and run those programs as well as getting players from them it will be great for the club.”
Wyndhamvale will be holding a barbecue on 21 October at the clubrooms for any interested players to come down and find out more information.
Potential players can also get in contact with the club via its Facebook page or contact Kerry Saunders on 0414 712 597.
