THE Werribee Men’s Division One basketball side is enjoying a breakout year in the Big V competition.
Having shown they had the potential to match it with any opposition last year, the Devils have taken things to the next level as they dominate the competition.
After 13 rounds, Werribee sits on top of the Watson pool ladder with a 13-3 win/loss record and a 10- point gap on nearest rival Mildura.
Leading the charge on court has been point guard Jordan Hughes who has dominated around the ring, consistently posting big numbers.
Hughes is averaging 20.8 points per game (the fifth best in the league), with a shooting accuracy of 42.1 per cent from the field.
“The season has been going well so far,” Hughes said.
“I felt like I had to step it up from last year and continue to improve, which is what I’m always trying to do, and as part of that it’s good to see a jump in a few of the stats.
“A lot of it is having more experience after playing a season in that division last year. The rest of it is just being a bit stronger and a bit smarter really.
“I’ll just be looking to keep on par with what I’ve been doing. This is where I wanted to be going into the season, so just basically to keep going and get my assists a bit higher.”
Hughes’ step up in form is consistent with the rest of his Werribee team mates who are benefiting from having a season under their belts in the Division One competition.
“We have certainly aimed high this season, so we are just trying to achieve the goals that we have set,” he said.
“We always, even from the start of last year, knew it was going to take time. I think we showed a lot of glimpses last year of what could be, but I think with having more time together and having more players, we have just been able to really take off.”
There are no plans to slow down for Werribee, with the Devils aiming to go deep into the post season in search of a championship win.
Hughes said a key to the team’s success was the balance across the board.
“It really helps when you come up against opposition teams because they don’t know where the points are going to come from. Pretty much everyone in our team can stand up in any specific match and score double figure points, which is a great thing,” he said.
