WYNDHAM’S roads are continuing to crumble under increased traffic congestion with the latest report revealing that 21 of the municipality’s roads are over capacity.
Wyndham Council’s 2013 Review of Traffic Volumes report was tabled at last week’s council meeting and will be used to lobby the State Government for more funding.
The release of the report coincided with the launch of the council’s Get Wyndham Moving campaign, which aims to move road congestion in Wyndham to the top of the political agenda.
Councillor Glenn Goodfellow said traffic on a section of Leakes Rd had increased by 21 per cent.
At roads located in Truganina and Tarneit, volumes increased by 17 per cent.
“We need the State Government to act urgently and fund road infrastructure on our most congested roads,” Cr Goodfellow said.
“It will not come as a surprise to many of our residents that our roads are at capacity, especially during peak hours.
“It is estimated that it takes three years between the planning process for duplications and upgrades of roads and the actual construction. In that time, Wyndham City will welcome another 20,000 residents and a further four roads are likely to have reached their capacity.”
As part of the campaign local transport champions have been chosen to tell their stories that will hopefully show the real impact of traffic congestion.
“Our transport champions use different modes of transport and represent different parts of our community, including families, businesses and young people and their stories represent the traffic and transport issues many of us face in Wyndham,” Mayor Bob Fairclough said.
“I’m calling on every Wyndham resident to get involved in this campaign to get the State Government to invest in our transport infrastructure.”
