A HOPPERS Crossing woman will be taking her passion for gender equality all the way to the United Nations.
Sarah Allen is one of a handful of people that has been chosen to take part in a delegation of Girl Guides from all over the world to participate in the Commission on the Status of Women sitting at the UN in New York this March.
The sitting will provide a global platform through which governments and civil society can discuss issues concerning gender equality, identify challenges, evaluate progress and formulate concrete policies to promote advancement of women worldwide.
Ms Allen is one of 18 people from the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS) chosen to take part in the event.
“The Millennium Development Goals will be something that define our generation,” Ms Allen said.
“WAGGGS is ensuring all girls and young woman are aware and actively working towards the MDG’s and I am thrilled to have been selected and contributing towards this amazing delegation.”
Erin Wicking, who will also be taking part in the two week event, said she had learned a lot from being a member of the Girl Guides.
“My 20 years in Girl Guides has taught me how vital it is to empower girls and women to speak out on the issues that matter to themselves, their families and their communities,” Ms Wicking said.
“I’m honoured to have this opportunity to speak on the world stage and advocate for a better world for all girls and women.”
The delegation will speak at the United Nations later this month.
