THE annual Lions Club of Werribee charity golf day will be held on 12 October at Werribee Park Golf Club with all proceeds going to the “Clown Doctors” at the Royal Children’s Hospital.
Lions President Lynn Crump is hoping for a full field, and welcomes sponsorship or goods and services that can help raise funds for the cause.
The Lions Club day has raised a phenomenal amount for charities over the years. The Clown Doctors at the Royal Children’s Hospital do a fabulous job with sick children and the club are to be congratulated for supporting them with this day.
If you or your company would like to help out please call Phil Saunders on 0412 003 963.

WELL-KNOWN Sanctuary Lakes member Don Carroll was celebrating last Saturday after he scored a hole-in-one on the par three sixth.
Don’s feat is terrific and even more so when you take into consideration that he will go into hospital at the end of the month for a hip replacement.
This is his second “ace,” as he had his first some years ago at Clifton Springs, his former golf club.

THERE will be quite a gathering at Melton Valley Golf Club on Saturday when the club conducts its annual Holden Scramble.
Some of the hierarchy from the Australian Professional Golfers Association and GMH will be in attendance as one player on the day will be the 700,000th participant since the competition started some 15 years ago.
Resident professional and host of the event Geoff Ross said he is proud that Melton Valley will now feature prominently in the history of the tournament.
He also said that the Holden Young Lions which is a group of top up-and-coming professionals will be there on the day as well as some of Holden’s V8 Touring Car drivers.

LAST Saturday saw some excellent golf played at courses in our region.
As it was the first Saturday of the month, many clubs held their monthly medal competitions and going by the results you had to be a fair sort of a golfer to take home the trophies.
Greg Gregory playing off a 10 handicap won Medway’s medal with a score of 41 points. At Kooringal, Angus Maclean playing off 11 won the medal at Kooringal with his score of 39 points. Brian Munn produced a great effort from the black tees to take Sanctuary Lakes’ medal with a superb round of 74 (4) 70. At nearby Werribee Park, Paul Collins pulled his socks up – and survived a countback – to join the medallists club with a fine 78 (9) 69 to win his first medal and also the Captain’s Cup.

IF YOU were thinking of going to the Australian Open in Melbourne in the not too distant future you might have to think again. It seems that the Open will be in Sydney for some time to come although many think that the event might come back to Victoria as a lead up to the 2011 Presidents Cup.
I believe that under a contract agreement, Golf Australia has to play the Open in Melbourne at least once before 2015 and it would be a way out to hold the tournament at Moonah Links just before the Presidents Cup. There are quite a few of the world’s top players who would like to play a top tournament on the Mornington Peninsula and this could give them the chance.
The Open this year will be at the magnificent New South Wales Golf Club and next year at The Lakes. Golf Australia and Tourism NSW are not saying too much about what happens after that. I think that seeing the tournament back in Victoria in 2011 is a good bet but as many of you who read this column know that I have been wrong on these sorts of things many times before.
