Crash mars race

A NASTY crash marred Footscray Cycling Club’s racing at Little River on Saturday, with C-Grade rider Steve Humphries falling heavily in thestrong crosswinds. Humphries, from Newport, clipped the wheel of the rider ahead and fell, hitting the ground hard. Many riders stopped racing to assist and as soon as the first-aid team established that he was concussed, he was taken to hospital by ambulance. Club spokesman Mark Micallef said it was one of the worst falls the club had seen for many years. Humphries suffered broken ribs, a broken collarbone, punctured lung and bleeding on the brain.
