AFTER 21 years together Aussie band, My Friend the Chocolate Cake will make their debut performance in Melbourne’s West.
The band will perform at The Substation this Friday to celebrate the release of their seventh album FIASCO.
Band member Helen Mountfort said the band was looking forward to performing on this side of the bridge.
The band, who originally just formed for a few gigs, started in 1989, when singer/songwriter and pianist David Bridie and cellist Helen were playing another music ensemble Not Drowning Waving.
The idea of the band began when David wrote a collection of songs that didn’t fit into the ‘Not Drowning Waving’ style.
He and Helen then began My Friend the Chocolate Cake with the intention of playing all acoustic music.
Helen said the band wasn’t meant to last more than a few weeks.
“We started out very casually,” she said.
Helen said one of the reasons the band has stayed together for so long is they’ve always been very understanding of each other’s commitments.
“We’ve never really had a desire to take over the world or be massive,” she said.
“We’re good friends which is part of the secret to our success.”
Helen said audiences should expect “a lot of fun” from their show in Newport.
“We have so much fun on stage,” she said.
