Decorations are poles apart

WYNDHAM Council has revealed why there was a lack of Christmas decorations gracing Watton St this year following a complaint from a resident.

At last week’s council meeting Brian Hickey asked the council why Werribee’s main street had not got into the festive spirit.

Wyndham Council’s Director of Infrastructure, Maurice Stabb, said the council could not get permission to hang any decorations in Watton St.

“In regards to Watton St, the image of Wyndham’s street scapes is very important to council,” Mr Stabb said.

“The poles in Watton St are controlled by power companies and council was unable to get permission to hang Christmas decorations from those poles.”

Mr Stabb said the council had however placed Christmas buntings from flagpoles throughout the municipality.

Mr Hickey told Star he was disappointed that the council did not embrace the Christmas spirit more.

“I thought it was very dull and I think it would have had a negative impact on businesses,” Mr Hickey said.

“They had decorations at the Hoppers Crossing shopping centre but none in the main street.

“I think some decorations would have been nice and maybe even some wondering musicians. They could do a lot to liven the place up.”
