A HOPPERS Crossing mother will sacrifice her brunette locks all for a good cause.
Kathryn Dean-Smith is getting ready to take part in the Leukaemia Foundations World’s Greatest Shave on 15 March.
She said she was nervous to say goodbye to her hair which she has always been proud of.
“Everyone knows I love my hair, I haven’t even dyed it before,” Ms Deans-Smith said.
“I always look after my hair but I thought, you know what, it’s for a good cause so why not?”
Ms Deans-Smith’s hair will meet the razor at the Moomba Festival in March and Stephanie Hechenberger, General Manager of the Leukaemia Foundation in Victoria, encouraged other people to be as brave as her.
“The World’s Greatest Shave is the Leukaemia Foundation’s most important fundraiser, providing vital funds to help lessen the impact for people affected by blood cancer,” Ms Hechenberger said.
“Money raised also supports vital ongoing blood cancer research. Research is improving survival rates, but blood cancer is still Australia’s biggest cancer killer after lung cancer, claiming a life every two hours.”
Ms Hechenberger said that those who decide to shave are also helping to normalise baldness, which can be one of the most distressing side-effects of cancer treatment.
So far Ms Deans-Smith has raised just over $155 but she said she was expecting the tally to rise closer to the event.
Her four-year-old daughter Kaylah said that she wants to shave her head too and she thought her mum would look “lovely”.
