EVERY week, Hoppers Crossing resident Jesse Valach trains in an arena surrounded by posters of wrestling identities such as Psycho Kid Thunder and the Steel Horsemen.
Mr Valach has his own wrestling character, Morphine, who will face-off against Ryan O’Hara at the New Age Wrestling Heavyweight Title Match in Albion on Saturday.
“I’ve always loved wrestling, I loved WWF as a kid. But I couldn’t find anywhere to train,” Mr Valach said.
However, after a friend told him about New Age Wrestling’s training facility in Sunshine, Mr Valach could not wait to begin training. “I went to my first training session and after that I was hooked,” the 29-year-old said.
He took part in his first match four weeks after starting out in wrestling and how now been in several tournaments, interstate promotions and even faced off against American identity Steve ‘Mr Wrestling’ Corino.
Even fracturing his shoulder during a training session has not put Mr Valach off wrestling.
“I’m actually the rookie. I haven’t been wrestling for very long, but I’ve risen through the ranks quite quickly and am going for a title after a year-and-a-half,” Mr Valach said.
“You can’t come into wrestling hoping to be a superstar, it won’t happen. There’s no money in wrestling. You have to do it because you love it.
“NAW’s like a family and that’s why I love it, for the comradeship.”
When Mr Valach started wrestling, he thought of the nickname Morphine because he intended to be part of a duo with another wrestler named Coedine.
The pair would have been known as ‘The Painkillers’ but after Coedine dropped out, Mr Valach went solo. The New Age Wrestling Heavyweight Title Match will be on at 27 Talmage St, Albion. Doors open at 7pm, match starts at 8.15pm, tickets at door or call 0402 60 13 60.
