VICTORIAN Netball League side Hume City Falcons wants to change its name to reflect its Western Suburbs influence.
The Altona-based club has put in a submission to Netball Victoria to change from “Hume City” to “City West”.
Falcons head coach Marg Lind said the Hume City name was not reflective of the number of players the club recruits from the West.
“We want our focus to be more on the Western Suburbs. We just think it’s a bit restrictive just to be called Hume City,” Lind said. “It just gives us more scope and it gives us a better profile. “
“We do have a lot of players from Footscray and Altona so we want to be a little bit more representative of what we’re doing.”
The VNL already has one Western Suburbs team in the league, Victoria University Western Lightning, but Lind believes there is room for another.
“I think there’s definitely room for both because the central west zone academy, which is like the TAC Cup in netball, has been very successful state-wide in terms of numbers going through to state teams, which means we’ve got the depth in the Western Suburbs, so there’s no reason why we can’t have two teams here.”
In other Falcons news, former Boroondara Genesis star goaler Kathleen Knott has signed for the club.
