A BRILLIANT bowling performance saw Williamstown cruise to its first win of the Victorian Sub District Cricket Association season against Malvern on Saturday.
After winning the toss, Williamstown captain Craig Sheedy sent Malvern into bat and the decision proved to be the right one.
Wickets consistently fell throughout the innings, with only four batsmen reaching double figures and none able to push past 20.
Sheedy was the pick of the bowlers taking 3/16 from nine overs while Mathew Inness (2/21) and Cain Speakman (2/11) were outstanding as Malvern was bowled out for 89 in the 39th over.
In reply, Williamstown easily reached the total, racing to 3/90 in the 19th over.
Brenton Hodges continued his great start to the season with the bat, posting a well-made 46 while Sheedy capped off a solid all-round day with 21.
The result moves Williamstown to ninth on the VSDCA ladder.
WERRIBEE dropped its first game of the VSDCA season on Saturday in a high scoring battle with Ormond.
After losing the toss and being made to bowl first, the Tigers were forced to battle against a strong batting line up, led by Maqsud Mansoor who posted a blistering 106.
He was well supported by a number of batsmen throughout the innings as the total raced to 8/225 at the end of 45 overs.
Tim O’Brien was the pick of the Werribee bowlers with 3/43.
In reply, two early wickets had Werribee on the back foot from the outset, before captain Shaun Dean launched a recovery effort.
Dean posted 67 while Wade McCall chipped in with 49 as the Tigers edged towards the target.
However, the combination of late wickets and tight bowling proved too much for Werribee, with Ormond hanging on to secure the win by just six runs.
A WELL-made 70 from Aaron Maynard wasn’t enough for Altona to defeat Moorabbin in the VSDCA on Saturday.
Chasing 250 for victory, Maynard was the only Altona batsman to get going as wickets continued to fall around him.
The half-century was a welcome return to form for the rising star, who had been dismissed for back-to-back ducks in his first two games of the season.
Josh Wells was the only other batsman to post a score of note as he went on to make 33.
Earlier in the day, Lee Elmore was the pick of the Altona bowlers, taking 3/33.
Elmore has now taken multiple wickets in all of his matches this season.
Saturday’s result sees Altona slip to seventh place on the VSDCA ladder with a 2-1 win/loss record for the season.
This week Altona will take on Brighton.
HOPPERS Crossing surprisingly declared at 9/254, with just three overs left in their innings on day one of their VTCA battle with western rival Spotswood at Hogans Road Reserve on Saturday.
While the home team did produce a solid first innings total, Spotswood bowlers Andrew Dickinson and Andrew Butler were outstanding with the ball in claiming four wickets apiece.
Dickinson bowled 16 overs and delivered three maidens on his way to 4/56, while Butler was busy in his 21 overs, claiming 4/77 including two maidens.
John Ross was the only other Woodsman to get among the wickets, claiming 1/36 off 11.
Three overs were bowled late in the day for the start of Spotswood’s run chase, where the Woodsmen find themselves on 0/6 with Abhijeet Sharma collecting all six runs to date.
He will join David Buysen in the middle for the start of the second day’s play this Saturday.
