QUICK action from the Werribee Fire Brigade managed to save a house from complete destruction as its garage was engulfed in flames.
First Lieutenant of the Werribee Fire Brigade Darryl Wells said at about 7pm on Monday 29 October crews attended a fire at Carter Crescent in Werribee.
“Volunteer members responding to the station were confronted with a large cloud of smoke rising from the area close to the fire station,” Mr Wells said.
“Several members were already at the station because Monday night is a training night. Also volunteers that live in the same street rushed to the scene to make sure all persons were out of the house, secure the scene and make the street hydrant ready for the arrival of the appliances.”
Mr Wells said when they arrived at the house crews found a semi-detached brick veneer garage well alight.
“An aggressive external front and rear firefight followed with the main fire knocked down and contained to the garage within ten minutes,” he said.
“The overhaul of the fire and complete extinguishment took a further one and a half hours. The cause of the fire is still being investigated although it is believed to be accidental.”
Captain Michael Wells said it was commendable that the firefighters were able to contain such an intense fire and ensure that no one received injuries.
Captain Wells also warned homeowners to check the safety of electrical appliances if they are using them in a garage.
