Pam Browne is proud to call herself a mad egger.
The Yarraville resident is vice-president and librarian of the Victorian Egg Decorators’ Guild Inc (VEDGI), whose members create excellent works of art out of emu, ostrich, quail, duck and rhea eggs.
Ms Browne and three other VEDGI members from the West, often meet at the Wyndham Art Works in Laverton North, to work on their egg craft.
“I call myself and the fellow ladies ‘mad eggers’, we’re not experts because we’re always learning, we enjoy the craft, talking about it and demonstrating it,” Ms Browne said.
“I’ve been doing it for about 15 years now and started out when I went to the Williamstown Craft Market. I saw a lady at a table decorating eggs, Frankie Fraser and I booked a lesson and the rest is history.”
Nowadays, she teaches egg decorating and sells her art work, which can take the form of Christening presents, miniature carousels or wedding-cake toppers.
“I find it satisfying – and I must use the word – humbling, that someone would want to pay for something I’ve made,” she said.
Members of VEDGI also display and demonstrate at events like the Royal Melbourne Show.
“You need patience, I’ve learned to be patient. You can’t rush it,” she said.
