WYNDHAM’S police and council are forging a stronger relationship in a bid to improve service to the community.
In a revived initiative that was first put into action four years ago, each council ward will be assigned a Sergeant who will work directly with the councillors of that ward to solve issues.
Wyndham’s Mayor Kim McAliney said the idea would ensure that residents saw more action being taken in their neighbourhood.
“It’s really important, we have so many initiatives and we’ve got be seen as working together,” Cr McAliney said.
“A lot of the issues that residents approach us about are actually police related.”
Senior Sergeant Peter Nichols said that police were also approached over issues that fall into the council’s jurisdiction.
“It’s a two way thing,” Sen Sgt Nichols said.
“People come to us for council issues. It could be anything from poor lighting in a park to rubbish dumping.
“This is a very proactive initiative.”
Councillor Glenn Goodfellow said the closer relationship between the council and police was a reflection of the work the two groups do.
“At the end of the day we are all doing the same thing for the community,” Cr Goodfellow said.
“We are all working for a safe, vibrant and harmonious community and we want the residents to come and help us along the way.”
