The Werribee Centrals Tennis Club will be celebrating their 16th Cuppa for Cancer charity fundraiser this month.
The oldest member of the club and event organiser Freda Hughes, 76, has been a part of all the events minus one, which she missed when she was away on holiday.
“The year we started one of our members was diagnosed with breast cancer,” Ms Hughes said.
“We thought we would have a morning tea and invite all our members to come along for support.”
Every year on the fourth Thursday of May the team of women come together for a ladies round robin event and a morning tea to help raise money for the Cancer Council.
Ms Hughes said the team is very involved throughout the year in raising funds for the charity.
Ms Hughes said everyone is welcome to come on the day.
“Only 24 of us play in teams down here but we get up to 50 people to come along on the day,” Ms Hughes said.
“We are quite happy with that but we would like more to come along,” she said.
“Even if you don’t play tennis you are invited around to come have a cuppa with us for a gold coin donation.”
The team has been recognised for their great efforts and hard work in raising money and awareness for cancer.
This year again they have been invited to a royal high tea organised by the Cancer Council to commend their efforts.
“When we started off it was only a few hundred dollars but as we went on we thought of new ways to raise money,” Ms Hughes said.
“We’ve raised over $18,000 in the last 16 years which is pretty good for 24 girls.”
