New club on track

A NEW athletic club has been formed in Wyndham.
Known as the Wyndham Track and Field Club, the new venture is the brainchild of coach Errol Hart, a former Indian national decathlon champion, who has been a successful coach in the city for many years.
Supported by local businessmen the new club plans to attract people from ethnic backgrounds and the disabled as well as long-established residents.
“While we have high ambitions for the club, our mission is to introduce many people to athletics, to foster their development and in time hope they graduate to country, state, national and international levels,” the club’s competitions manager Peter Gavaghan said.
“Above all else however, we want them to enjoy taking part in some of the many disciplines that athletics offers, even if they never reach the highest levels.
“Our mission is to unite the community through sport and get local business support for our local athletic talent.”
The club is in the process of gaining accreditation with Athletics Victoria.
It has already become an incorporated body and has set up essential administrative functions as well as the purchase of technical equipment.
“We plan to compete in team events at metro level, as well as individuals in country, state and national championships,” Gavaghan said.
“Boys and girls aged over 12 years are invited to join our existing core group.“We will cater for all levels, from beginners to veterans.
“Those from deprived socio or ethnic backgrounds, as well as the disabled, will be most welcome. No experience is necessary but enthusiasm is a must – and a touch of ambition would help.
“We have highly qualified coaches signed up. For those interested in event coaching and official status, the club will offer sponsored opportunities for development.”
Wyndham Track and Field Club is planning to train locally throughout the year to encourage wide participation by Wyndham people.
Ultimately the club would like to see Wyndham become the centre for excellence in Australian athletics with an indoor track which could be used all year round.
“Such a facility would go a long way to offering athletes a weather-proof training venue and could be used for major events outside Australia’s normal summer season. We feel the move to year-round competition would ultimately help Australian athletes achieve more at international level.”
Membership sign up day is to be held Saturday 11 May, at the Werribee Rose Gardens.
