WINTER is here and with it comes cold, windy and often wet days and nights.
But not everyone is fortunate enough to find the means to keep warm during this season.
Werribee Funerals has launched an urgent winter blanket appeal in support of the Sacred Heart Mission, St Kilda’s efforts to help Victoria’s 20,000 homeless cope with the current cold conditions.
Manager of Fundraising and Communications at Sacred Heart Mission Fiona Healy said the recent drop in overnight temperatures had generated an urgent need for winter blankets.
“As winter deepens and the nights become colder, the need for warm bedding is critical to the health and wellbeing of those who find themselves without adequate access to shelter,” Ms Healy said.
Werribee Funerals Manager Steve Moss said management and staff at Werribee Funerals decided they wanted to do something practical to help.
“There are many people, half of whom are under 25 years of age, really suffering in the cold, especially at night, so we looked for a simple but effective way we might be able to help,” Mr Moss said.
“If we all get behind this, then we can all help bring some immediate relief to those in need.”
Locals are being asked to bring new or old blankets into Werribee Funerals any weekday so they can be urgently redistributed to the homeless through the Sacred Heart of Mission’s network.
The winter blanket appeal will run until Friday 16 August.
Anyone wishing to support the appeal can drop off their clean blankets to Werribee Funerals, 11-13 Greaves St, Werribee.
