A GROUP of determined Point Cook residents are fighting to ensure that Santa will be able to deliver every package and greeting card this Christmas.
Liz Mumby is headlining the campaign for another post office in the rapidly growing suburb.
Currently there is only one post office serving a population of 33,000 residents – a number that is expected to grow to 56,000 by 2021.
Along with Claire McKay she has collected more than 350 petitions supporting the call in just a few days time.
Ms Mumby said she was inspired to do something after seeing the long lines at the current post office.
“When I was walking past the post office seven or eight months ago I just saw what the queue was like and I thought, that’s not good enough,” Ms Mumby said.
There have been several calls for a new store since one at Sanctuary Lakes was closed in 2008.
Currently some customers have been told that they may have to wait up to 40 minutes to be served at the store.
The group has met with several representatives from Australia Post recently and the company has agreed to some concessions, such as a temporary post office that will run until the end of January.
But Ms Mumby said the options offered so far were just band-aid solutions.
“People neglect the new areas like this until it’s too late and then they realise they should have done something a few years ago,” she said.
“If it’s this bad this Christmas then it’s only going to get worse in a few years time.”
The group have set up a facebook page called Support Another Post Office in Point Cook.
