VICTORIA Vatsilas is beaming after being selected to represent Victoria in the Australian Women’s Gymnastics Championships in Perth next month.
The 14-year-old Keilor resident was one of six to make the squad, from 29 competitors, and one of the best performers at the trials.
Competing for state selection on the beam, bars, floor and vault, Vatsilas was the second best overall performer, and received the highest score for her specialty apparatus – the beam.
“I was surprised but very happy because I wasn’t expected to come second,” the Year 9 Overnewton College student said.
She said she was looking forward to the national championships in July, which could become a springboard to Olympic selection.
“I don’t know what to expect but I’m excited,” she said. “I want to go to the Olympics in 2016 or 2020.”
“I manage to fit it all in because I have Tuesday and Thursday afternoons off, and I get a lot of (training) done in school.”
The national championships are on 8-14 July.
