Winter is a fire worry

By Nicole Precel
WINTER is the most dangerous time for house fires and firefighters are warning residents to stay safe.
The Country Fire Authority and Metropolitan Fire Brigade are launching the Winter Fire Safety Campaign, which focuses on kitchen safety.
Brimbank had 27 house fires during the winter of 2009, seven more than the previous year, while Hobsons Bay had 13.
About 30 per cent of house fires start in the kitchen, 15 per cent in the lounge area and 11 per cent in bedrooms. These are mostly due to electrical failures and about 22 per cent are due to cooking equipment.
MFB manager community education Commander Frank Stockton said fires could occur because of a simple loss of concentration.
“Fat and cooking oil can reach a temperature where it ignites; so it is important you are always watching it. Never leave cooking unattended,” he said.
CFA Director of Community Safety Lisa Sturzenegger said people needed to maintain heating appliances and have them checked by an electrician.
“Working smoke alarms and a well practised home fire escape plan are the best ways to ensure safety,” she said.
