CANCER is a big killer affecting thousands of Australians directly and indirectly every day.
Local businessman Leigh Johnston is taking matters into his own hands, or feet, in the battle against cancer and pedalling to raise money and awareness for the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre.
Mr Johnston, and his team, will hop on their bikes and join the two day, 200km ride across Victoria as part of the Ride to Conquer Cancer later this month.
Mr Johnston said every member of his team had been affected by cancer in some way.
Mr Johnston had lost relatives to cancer and a few years ago he experienced one of his closest friends lose his father to cancer too.
He embarked on this journey not only to honour the people who he knew but to also support everyone who had ever been affected by cancer or ever will.
“Even though it’s a challenging ride, it is nothing compared to the challenges those affected by cancer face,” Mr Johnston said.
Mr Johnston, who took part in the challenge last year too, admitted the challenge was one of the hardest things he had ever done, but knowing his efforts made a difference encouraged him to do it again, he said.
“It’s just one of things you keep coming back to do because you know it’s going to help a good cause,” he said.
Werribee Nissan also jumped on board to help, and this Saturday 12 October will host a BBQ to help raise more funds with Mr Johnston and his team.
Everyone is invited to join the fun and help the cause.
Western Bulldogs star player Brad Johnson will also be there meeting local fans and there will be a jumping castle for children.
