PINK passion is taking over the western suburbs, as communities come together to help raise money and awareness for the most common cancer affecting women – breast cancer.
Werribee resident Rhonda Davies knows too well about the harshness of breast cancer.
Thirteen years ago she lost her sister Lisa to it and not a day passes without heartache.
“She just went through hell and all these years down the track we all still grieve and we hate remembering what she went through, all the pain and anguish,” Ms Davies said remembering her sister’s battle.
“I never want people to feel what we do but unfortunately they do, it happens to people every day.”
Lisa was 27 years old when she was first diagnosed with breast cancer.
After treatment and the removal of her lymph nodes she thought she had beaten the cancer.
But several years later Lisa was back in hospital.
Unable to walk, thinking she strained her back, doctors discovered Lisa’s cancer had infiltrated her bones and numerous tumours were found.
It eventually spread to her liver and within weeks Lisa lost her battle aged 34.
Her son was only 11 at the time of her passing.
In honour of her sister, Ms Davies is hosting a Girls Night In event to raise as much money as possible for those affected.
“Lots of people are getting behind it, I’m so excited,” Ms Davies said.
“This is for everybody who has ever been affected by it and I hope that we find a cure for it in the near future.”
