A LAST-ditch role from Dane McKinnon has taken Werribee RSL to victory over Rosamond in the Premier Bowls on Saturday.
The Bees were trailing all day and looked certain to lose, when McKinnon fell seven shots behind in his rink.
However, the teenager refused to give up without a fight and staged a miraculous recovery. He won 20 shots in a row to win the rink 17-30 and secure victory for his side.
Committee member Rob Casey was rapt his club was able to get the win in tense circumstances.
“It was a great effort, the rink really dug in, and they went for it and got the win,” he said.
“Most of the day, they trailed by 20 shots, and it was only in the closing stages that they started to come back and not until the very last end when they hit the front with the last bowl.”
Casey paid credit to Rosamond who played well above their bottom of the ladder position.
“We have always had trouble with Rosamond at Rosamond. Every time we play there, we have a lot of trouble with them. They seem to lift their game and play extremely well against Werribee,” he said.
“There are a lot of close mates between the two clubs, and it just seems to be one of those games. It’s like a Collingwood and Essendon game.”
The loss is the third nail-biting defeat of the season for the Rockets who also lost to Essendon in round one by one shot and Altona in round two by five shots.
The late surge from McKinnon continues what has been an outstanding year for him at Werribee.
“He has been excellent. He is going very well for a boy who is nearly 18, and there aren’t many better about at his age,” Casey said.
