IN THE DOGHOUSE At all levels, footy’s the real winner

WHAT a great weekend it was for local footy. The Bulldogs didn’t lose, Williamstown won the Foxtel Cup in Perth and Werribee continued its winning way maintaining a spot in the top four of the VFL competition. Williamstown’s effort was sensational beating a very good Claremont side. The Seagulls made history being the inaugural winners and keeping the VFL as the second best competition in the country. The only downside for the boys from Point Gellibrand is in being in the Foxtel Cup they missed out on the fixture byes and their fans will be hoping that does not have an effect coming into the finals. This week is a big test against the undefeated Port Melbourne team.
I SEE yet another football education program being set up at AFL level with a panel of current indigenous players being formed to spread the word about racial vilification to players in the AFL. I have no problem with that at all but I think many of these programs should begin at under-age level. Whether it is responsible gambling, racial abuse, binge drinking or social media, tackle these issues at grass-roots level and then society in general would benefit. You could introduce one program a year from the under-12s through to the under-16s. In my opinion this is workable and the broader community would benefit not just 700 elite sportsmen. I know it would cost plenty but it would be worth it.
TWO other sides doing very well in their own competitions are the Werribee Districts Amateur side in the Ammos Premier C Grade competition and Werribee Centrals in the GDFL. Both sides are well coached by Kirk Norton and David Leatch two very popular footy figures in the west. Kirk is something of a legend especially his junior coaching days at Werribee Juniors. ‘Leatchy’ played some good footy for Hoppers Crossing before taking the reins at Galvin Park. Both sides should have success in September.
HE probably won’t play AFL footy this season for North Melbourne but Majak Daw certainly has an impressive highlight reel from his work at Werribee. Last week again his powerful running and kicking skills provided the goal of the day for the ABC cameras. While on goal kicking, WRFL veteran Jason Clarke turned the clock back on the weekend kicking 15 for Port Melbourne Colts. The former Barry Priest Medallist is enjoying his footy and is giving the Colts a new spring in their step heading into finals.
