A WERRIBEE electrical company is shedding light on the issue of recycling, and is joining a prestigious group along the way.
Laser Electrical Werribee has been selected as one of just 14 companies in Australia to have Federal Government and Environment Protection and Heritage Council (EPHC) permission to play a part in recycling fluorescent light tubes.
The business will act as a drop-off point where people can leave their old fluorescent lights and be certain that they will be recycled properly.
The lights in question contain mercury and an estimated 95 per cent of them end up in landfill every year.
Norm McWilliam, Electrical Manager of Laser Electrical, said the company volunteered for the role after learning about the dangers of dumping the lights.
“When you dump them in the tip, you are actually dumping mercury, aluminium, amalgam, and all sorts of other nasty things,” Mr McWilliam said.
“This scheme is good for two reasons, one you are saving the environment from pollution, and two, you are also recycling.”
Upon dropping off a lamp at the company, people will receive a certificate guaranteeing them that it will be recycled safely.
