THE students and teachers at Point Cook College were abuzz last Wednesday as they embraced World Environmental Day.
Students were keeping busy across the school yard and classrooms with a number of activities designed to help educate the students about the environment.
Sustainability Coordinator Robyn Cairns said the students were excited to take part in the day.
“We value the environment and we aim to help connect the children to their local environment so that can help them make a difference for the future of the planet,” Ms Cairns said.
The school’s theme for World Environmental Day was based on passionate surfer and environmentalist Tim Silverwood’s “Take 3” initiative.
Mr Silverwood collaborated with a group of surfers, beach-lovers and a marine biologist to create the non-profit organisation ‘Take 3 – A Clean Beach Initiative’.
The Take 3 message encourages people to take away three pieces of rubbish when leaving a beach or waterway.
In following with the Take 3 message children were asked to bring three pieces of recyclable plastic items from home to help create marine sculptures.
“We are also reporting the number of plastic we collect back to the Take 3 campaign,” Ms Cairns said.
Students were also encouraged to wear green or dress as their favourite marine creature.
The school is proactive in reducing its carbon footprint and has recently been awarded three stars as a sustainable school.
