WYNDAM Vale made a slow start to the Williamstown and District Cricket Association season on Saturday, defeated in their round one clash against Point Cook by four wickets.
After winning the toss and batting, Wyndham Vale may have been regretting the decision as they lost wickets at regular intervals throughout their innings.
Jay Dolliver was the top scorer with 23 while wicketkeeper Joel Roze chipped in with a handy 19 runs batting at number eight.
However, with eight players unable to break into double figures, the score of 96 was a disappointing one.
Point Cook produced a flawless fielding performance with none of their bowlers going for more than three runs per over.
Opener Troy Semmens finished with the best figures of 3/23 from his 10 overs and was well supported by Joseph Farmer who took 3/24.
With their batsmen putting them behind the eight ball, the
Wyndham Vale bowlers were left with a tough task after the lunch interval.
They initially struggled to get an all-important break through as a steady Point Cook set about slowly chasing down the target.
With the score on 0/20, things began to click for Wyndham Vale as they took 3/7 to bring the match alive.
This brought Point Cook’s Troy Wilson to the crease and from there the talented batsman began to guide his side to the victory.
Wilson scored 37 runs, to go with his three catches earlier in the day.
He was dismissed with the score on 96 but the damage had been done as Point Cook brought up the victory in the 31st over.
It was a much better performance from the Wyndham Vale bowlers who were able to keep the run rate down for the entire innings.
They will be left to wonder what could have been though after they gave away 17 extras through no-balls and wides.
Jake Styles was the best with the ball, finishing the match with 2/24 from his seven overs.
Wyndham Vale will look to get on the winners list next week when they take on Gellibrand Cricket Club while Point Cook will aim to take back-to-back wins against the Williamstown Colts.
